Who? The Southern Darts is a training squad for junior orienteers aged 8-12 most likely learning easy-beginner moderate navigation. We are a social squad focused on helping children
- to become more independent with their orienteering skills to move away from shadowed orienteering with a parent and
- for those coming from primary school orienteering and wanting to learn more advanced skills in a competitive setting.
What? Each year Orienteering SA hosts a number of training sessions for the Darts. These are usually held in the first and second half of the year. The training at the beginning of the year is to help juniors become more confident with their skills to help them with SA Schools orienteering champs and other bush competitions. The training in the second half of the year is to extend those skills learnt in the beginning of the year as the juniors transition into Summer orienteering events and into the new year. Juniors aged 8-12 are welcome to join at any stage of the year. New members are always welcome!
When? Trainings for the first half of the year will be held in conjunction with orienteering events. The trainings will be held 30mins before the events start using the same map the event will be on. The aim of the training is to learn a new skill before the event to practice in the event after. The trainings are free but you must register for the event on Eventor as normal. Parents are more than welcome to also participate in the trainings (in fact, be prepared to get involved!)
Training days (in conjunction with events that you must register for on Eventor)
27th March- Belair NP - Which way is north? How to make rough bearings
3rd April- Stony fell - reading the map and learning what the symbols mean
1st May- Morphett Vale - using a linear feature to find your control
15th May- Wadmore Park - Relocation. Using the features around me to figure out where I am
29th May- Mt Crawford - Using bearings to go cross country (cutting corners)
If you wish to attend the trainings before the events, Please contact Bridget Uppill to let her know. Please be there 5 mins before the training starts to be ready to go (be at training at 9:25am for training to start at 9:30. Events after start at 10am)

In 2020, Orienteering Australia developed a National Sporting Schools Orienteering Curriculum. The two new and exciting programs, for Primary School (Years 3-6) and Secondary School (Years 7-8) students, will from Term 2, 2021. The program delivery guide and resources were created in a rigorous review process, culminating in pilot programs run across Australia. The feedback from these pilots was outstanding, with teachers blown away about how orienteering could get an entire group participating. It was often noted that students who never participated in other sports not only participated, but excelled!
Both offerings (Primary and Secondary) have been designed to give students the opportunity to sample a fun, safe and inclusive, modified Orienteering program on-site, in their school environment. They incorporate a series of user-friendly activities and support resources, which seamlessly align to the Australian Curriculum (Health and Physical Education and Mathematics), the Australian Professional Standards for Teaching and the Australian Physical Literacy Framework using engaging, group-based, modified Orienteering activities as the vehicle for learning. Furthermore, there are endless opportunities for variation and progression, with activities such as electronic timing, orienteering course setting and route choice analysis providing engaging and educational extension to the program.
The new materials will allow orienteering to be delivered by not only qualified orienteering coaches, but also by teachers with little or no Orienteering experience. As part of the orienteering in schools packages available, all delivery support resources, training, maps and equipment can be provided. Orienteering uniquely challenges participants both physically and mentally, being suitable for EVERY school and EVERY student!
Do you know of a school that may be interested in undertaking an Orienteering program? If so encourage them to visit the Orienteering page on the Sporting Schools website, where funding is available for both primary and targeted secondary school programs. They can also find out more at the Sporting Schools page on Orienteering SA website.
Are you interested in being involved in delivery of school orienteering programs using these new resources? Contact the OSA Schools coordinator using the email button at the bottom of the OSA Sporting Schools web page. OSA can provide coaches to deliver thsi program and produce an orienteering map like the example below through the Sporting Schools program.
The Southern Arrows delivered the most successful Snap Sprint Series of the past 10 years, on Friday nights during February. This was the 10th edition of the series, which started in 2012 as a fundraiser for South Australia’s elite orienteering squad (subsidising uniforms and entries for National Orienteering League races) and which provides orienteers with opportunities to socialise and compare splits, I mean undertake essential practice for the SA Sprint Championships.
Events and attendances were:
Flinders University – 92 competitors
Underdale – 68 competitors (experiencing a flooded River Torrens, thanks to the weir’s outflow, including a flooded bridge to the start)
Belair – 112 competitors (many of whom enjoyed the Escapegoat MTB café afterwards)
Semaphore Park – 69 competitors
All courses can be seen on Route Gadget - http://ospot.xyz/gadget/rg2/
The Arrows would like to thank Onkaparinga Hills Orienteering Club for the use of their maps and Snap Printing for subsidising the printing, and of course we thank everyone for turning up each Friday.
Wallaringa Orienteers hosted the South Australian Sprint Orienteering Championships on February 28th, using a new map at Roseworthy Agricultural College thanks to the University of Adelaide, mapped by David George for Tintookies Orienteers. 100 competitors appeared to enjoy Jenny Casanova’s crisscrossing courses – including controls ‘hidden’ inside the stables, planted into a hay bale, and at the top of the stairs in the oval grandstand; if you haven’t uploaded your route (chosen or inadvertent) yet, it’s not too late to do so at: http://ospot.xyz/gadget/rg2/#219
M21A was won by Angus Haines in a time of 15:13, his first victory at senior level, while Lanita Steer and Olivia Sprod tied for first place in W21A and Bridget Uppill powerwalked the W21 course at 37 weeks’ pregnant! 21A Placegettes are here:
Full results here: https://eventor.orienteering.asn.au/Events/ResultList?eventId=11049&groupBy=EventClass Event Organiser Tony Roberts plus Controller Aylwin Lim (TJ) ensured that the event ran smoothly, and it was pleasing that so many orienteers stayed around for the presentations in the hope of receiving Fruchocs from WA president Tyson Hillyard. Wallaringa is a small club, but we punch above our weight, and even the 3-year-old volunteered to collect controls afterwards 😊
Organized orienteering activities are now all cancelled, however some training groups have now started - for small group training - contact coaching coordinator (under Contacts)

The SA Sprint Championships was the final event in 6 weeks of sprint orienteering events, with 5 events in Sprint Adelaide over the Australia Day Long Weekend, followed by 4 Arrows sprint series events.
The map area of Aberfoyle High School and the adjacent Happy Valley Sports Park was updated to sprint mapping specification by Oliver Williams, here over the summer from the UK to assist OSA with mapping and coaching. The event required negotiation with the school so that perimeter gates were open for the duration of the event.
The event was presented by Onkaparinga Hills OC, with courses planned by Craig Colwell. Hot muggy conditions were the order of the day. Fortunately the overcast cloudy conditions protected participants from the sun for most of the event, except for a short spell in the middle, which combined with a short violent “whirly whirly” saw the destruction of one of the clubs pop-up tents. when it went airborne in a Mary Poppins fashion.
Courses for all classes except the sub-juniors had two maps, to enable the complex school campus to be visited twice over the course. All courses are available on Route Gadget, overall results for classes on Eventor and splits by course on WinSplits. The latter show that many orienteers had small errors due the technical orienteering in the school campus section of the map. Winners of the open classes were Simon Uppill in M21A ahead of Olly Williams and Will Kennedy, and in W21A Olivia Sprod ahead of Bridget Anderson and Lanita Steer.

Tjuringa Orienteers presents an event on this rarely used section of Mt Crawford Forest that has been recently updated.
Mostly open, easy running, pine forest with patches of native bush. Gentle undulating terrain with nice pleasant tracks for beginners and families, and lots of point features for the more advanced orienteers.
Most of Mt Crawford is now embargoed, and access is forbidden until the National Championships Carnival in October. This is your only chance to practice in classic Mt Crawford terrain before then.

Over 100 competitors enjoyed the first bush OY at Mack Creek. The weather, though variable, was mostly kind to competitors and most enjoyed their runs. Some found the terrain challenging. Well done David George for planning such interesting & challenging courses.
Thanks also to others from Tintookies who assisted in any way particularly Barry Wheeler (Organiser) and Bob Smith (Controller)
The Juniors also had training and the event was a Schools Selection Trial.
Many competitors had their eyes set on the Easter competitions in Tasmania. Good luck to all South Australians.

This Sunday, Tintookies will be hosting the first bush OY event for the season at Mack Creek. This map presents classic spur gully terrain with scattered mining remnants while the shorter courses are on the flatter ground to the E of the park. The longer courses also get to explore some of the more interesting sections rocky sections to the west. This is the first time this map has been used for an event since the Sampson Flat fires. The park is currently looking magnificent, and being dry at the moment is easier to navigate.
The Junior Arrows will also be having short training session at 9:15am before the actual event. This will be a short warm up activity focusing on a particular skill so you can then practice it on the actual course.
Pre enter and pay on the day. To be eligible for OY points you must be a club member and enter in your age class. If you prefer to be non-competitive you can enter by course. Provisional course information is available in the event information here at the link below for pre-entries.
.
Those nominating for a schools team position are advised to run your age class 14 and up. This is important if you are 12 this year and nominating as you will need to run MW14 to contend for a position in the team. Please contact Bridget if you have any questions regarding this
Pre-entries close Wednesday 21st March at midnight: https://eventor.orienteering.asn.au/Events/Show/6532
