Three days of orienteering were held in the Wilpena area over the June Long Weekend – the weather was mu8ch kinder than our last foray into this area in October 2020 when the events were held in hotter and in one case very dusty weather.
The Saturday afternoon event run by Onkaparinga Hills was held at Manawarra, where the complex knolls and creeks enable technical Middle Distance style course planning. The courses set by Evelyn Colwell followed this style well and all course can be seen on Route Gadget. Course 1 below
Sunday morning OY event was on the Wilpena Spurs map, off the Sacred Canyon Road with National Parks kindly allowing access to the area as this road is closed to the general public. Courses were set by Phil Hazell with the event run by Tintookies. Some controls on subtle topographic features added to the challenge to the runners. All course are available on Route Gadget
Monday morning used a start at the northwestern end of the Rawnsley Park map, with event by Tjuringa and courses by first time course planner Phil Hearnden. The shorter courses were around the bush camping and adjacent areas, whilst longer courses went through the gap in the range returning the same way of having a leg over the ridge line. All course are in Route Gadget.
